TUESDAY, April 10, 2018 (HealthDay News) — As with the general population, metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), according to a study published online April 3 in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases.
Maryam Mobini, M.D., from Mazandaran University in Sari, Iran, and colleagues evaluated the frequency of MetS in 73 SLE patients (95.8 percent female) compared with 73 age- and sex-matched controls.
The researchers found that there was not a significant difference of MetS in SLE patients versus controls (P > 0.05). However, SLE patients were more likely to have hypertension (P = 0.038). Age and disease duration were significantly higher in the MetS subgroup among SLE patients with major organ involvement (P < 0.05).
“The frequency of MetS was not significantly different from that of the control group, but almost half of the patients were found with this syndrome,” the authors write. “This calls for further follow up and appropriate treatment of patients with MetS.”
