Radiation Measures Similar for Left, Right Transradial Approach

All radiation measures were lowest for patients with the transfemoral approach

TUESDAY, Aug. 9, 2016 (HealthDay News) — For patients with predictors of failure of the transradial approach (TRA) for coronary angiography, radiation measures do not differ with left or right approach, according to a study published in the Aug. 15 issue of The American Journal of Cardiology.

Binita Shah, M.D., from the New York University School of Medicine in New York City, and colleagues determined the effects of left versus right TRA on radiation parameters in patients with predictors of TRA failure (at least three of the four following criteria: age ≥70 years, female gender, height ≤64 inches, and hypertension). Participants referred to TRA operators were randomized to right or left TRA (50 patients each) and 50 participants were referred to transfemoral approach (TFA) operators. The radiation measure of dose-area product (DAP) was the primary end point.

The researchers observed no significant difference in DAP, fluoroscopy time, and operator radiation exposure between left and right TRA; total dose was significantly lower with left TRA. The TFA cohort had the lowest radiation parameters. After adjustment for differences in baseline characteristics, results were similar.

“In conclusion, median measurements of radiation were overall not significantly different between left versus right TRA in this select population of patients with predictors of TRA failure,” the authors write. “All measurements of radiation were lowest in the TFA group.”

Two authors disclosed financial ties to the medical device industry.
