High patient satisfaction for preoperative consultation for Mohs micrographic surgery
TUESDAY, Jan. 20, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Patient satisfaction is high for shared medical appointments (SMAs) for preoperative consultation regarding Mohs micrographic surgery, according to a study published in the February issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Thomas J. Knackstedt, M.D., and Faramarz H. Samie, M.D., Ph.D., from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., conducted a pilot study to examine patient satisfaction with SMAs for preoperative consultation for Mohs micrographic surgery. They assessed patient satisfaction over a six-month period using a 13-question survey.
Among 149 patients who were seen in SMAs, the survey response rate was 65.8 percent. The researchers found that the mean value on Likert scale questions was 4.29 ± 0.09 (on a 1 to 5 scale, where 5 is best). The SMA model was found to be useful (84.7 percent), and most participants reported that they would attend an SMA in the future (80.6 percent).
“SMA can be successfully used for the Mohs preoperative consultation visit with high patient satisfaction,” the authors write.
