Consumer Quality Index Chronic Skin Disease instrument measures patient experience
THURSDAY, June 25, 2015 (HealthDay News) — A new instrument regarding chronic skin disease care is useful for measuring patient experiences, according to a study published online June 22 in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Oda D. van Cranenburgh, from the University of Amsterdam, and colleagues developed a patient experience questionnaire regarding chronic skin disease care (Consumer Quality Index Chronic Skin Disease [CQI-CSD]). They randomly selected 5,647 adult patients who had received dermatological care in the past 12 months in 20 hospitals and invited them to fill out the questionnaire.
Analyses included data from 1,160 of 3,989 eligible respondents (response rate, 29 percent). The researchers found that the seven scales of the CQI-CSD demonstrated high internal consistency. The instrument had limited discriminative power. Patients were positive about the nurse- and doctor-provided care but felt that there was room for improvement in the provision of information by health care providers, accessibility of care, and patient involvement. The CQI-CSD was optimized, resulting in a 65-item revised questionnaire.
“The CQI-CSD provides useful information about patient experiences with dermatological care on several quality aspects,” the authors write. “The questionnaire may be used by health care providers to measure provided health care in their hospital, to identify priorities for quality improvement, and to make comparisons among hospitals with respect to cooperation of health care providers, waiting time, and facilities of care.”
