Mode salary for men $200-225,000 versus $175-200,000 for women; difference persisted since 2008
TUESDAY, May 12, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Salary disparities exist between male and female internal medicine residency program directors (PDs), according to a study published in the The American Journal of Medicine.
Lisa L. Willett, M.D., from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues examined whether salary disparities exist between male and female internal medicine residency PDs. Salary and demographic characteristics of PDs were assessed in the annual Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine survey, conducted in August 2012. Data were obtained for 241 PDs (70.1 percent men and 29.9 percent women). Historical trends of mode salary were examined using survey data from 2008 to 2011.
The researchers found that the mode salary for men was $200,000 to $225,000, compared with $175,000 to $200,000 for women (P = 0.0005). The distribution of salary remained different by gender after adjustment for academic rank, career in general internal medicine, and PD age (P = 0.004). The mode salary difference has persisted since 2008.
“Leaders in academic medical centers, residency and fellowship directors, and all faculty in medical education, need to be aware that salary disparities cited decades ago persist in this sample of medical educators,” the authors write. “Closing the gender gap will require continued advocacy for measuring and reporting salary gaps, and changing the culture of academic medical centers.”
