Five ‘Top Issues’ to Be Discussed at AMA Medical Student Forum

Issues include vaccination, Medicaid expansion, health care economics, loans, opioid epidemic

MONDAY, May 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Issues that will be at the forefront of the National Medical Student Meeting include vaccinations, health care economics, Medicaid expansion, medical education loans, and the nationwide opioid epidemic, according to a report from the American Medical Association (AMA).

These issues will be discussed at the meeting, which will be held from June 4 to 6 in Chicago, and students can review proposals that may become AMA policy online.

According to the report, medical students have proposed that the AMA develop physician resources aimed at improving patient education regarding the safety and effectiveness of vaccination. Students have also proposed the development of model business and economics curriculum to help them learn more about external forces shaping the health care system. With respect to Medicaid expansion, students have proposed that the AMA monitor the impact of reduced payments to safety-net hospitals, and encourage AMA advocacy for state expansion of Medicaid programs. Medical education loan forgiveness will also be on the agenda, with discussion expected on the proposed capping of Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Two proposals that address the opioid overdose epidemic include advocating for over-the-counter availability of naloxone and examining the effectiveness of opioid return programs.

Medical students can visit the online AMA Medical Student Section forum to review these proposals and others, offer comments and suggestions, and discuss resolutions with other students.
