Endurance-Exercise-Induced Impairments in Atrial Function

In healthy adults, exercise-dose-dependent impairment in atrial function, mainly in right atrium

FRIDAY, Aug. 26, 2016 (HealthDay News) — During endurance exercise, there is exercise-dose-dependent impairment in atrial function, according to a study published online Aug. 17 in JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.

Maria Sanz-de la Garza, M.D., from IDIBAPS in Barcelona, Spain, and colleagues characterized the acute atrial response to endurance exercise. Fifty-five healthy adults underwent echocardiography at baseline and after a three-stage trail race (short [S], 14 km, 17 participants; medium [M], 35 km, 21 participants; and long [L], 56 km, 17 participants).

The researchers found that after the race there was a decrease in right atrial (RA) reservoir function in group M and a further decrease in group L, with no change noted in group S. In groups L, M, and S, RA contractile function decreased, showed no change, and increased, respectively. Similar trends, with less pronounced changes, were seen in left atrial reservoir and contractile function. After the race, there was a correlation between decrease in RA reservoir and decrease in right ventricular (RV) global longitudinal strain.

“During a trail-running race, an acute, exercise-dose-dependent impairment in atrial function was observed, mostly in the RA, which was related to RV systolic dysfunction,” the authors write. “The impact on atrial function of long-term endurance training might lead to atrial remodeling, favoring arrhythmia development.”
