THURSDAY, Feb. 2, 2023 (HealthDay News) — Few high-quality educational surgical videos are available for green-light laser vaporization of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia, according to a study published in the December issue of Translational Andrology and Urology.

Shi-Qin Yang, from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, and colleagues examined the educational value of YouTube videos relating to photoselective vaporization of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia. To assess the educational value, a checklist including four major and 16 minor items was developed. Seventy-four surgical videos (average length, 12.69 minutes) were assessed.

For educational videos, the mean number of days available online was 2,607, with the earliest videos dating to 2006 and latest videos from 2021. Video definition was classified as high, moderate, and low, accounting for 21.6, 66.2, and 12.2 percent, respectively. The average number of likes was 34.26 and average number of dislikes was 0. The researchers found that the average video score was 6.65 (range, 2 to 12). Only 24.3 percent of videos emphasized the critical steps of the surgery. The number of video views was related to the number of online days and likes. Video scores were related to the number of likes, and there was an association observed for the annual average number of views with the number of views and number of likes.

“YouTube lacks high-quality educational surgical videos of green laser vaporization of the prostate, and more detailed explanations of the key steps of the operation are needed,” the authors write. “We hope that more videos with higher educational value can be published in the future to help beginners master this technology.”
